Today is July 1st and it marks the official start of the fourth month of the existence of Trumpet Marine. We had a practice today in preparation for our second gig on the 12th. The practice went well and after the practice, the guys talked about the fact that this was starting to become something that mattered to all of us. That was a really great thing for me to hear.
Considering that Trumpet Marine began life as a synonym for "Ryan Sutter Recording Stuff in His Basement", it's really fascinating how this whole process of band-building has proceeded. It began with songs I wrote and me basically asking a favor of the other guys to help me record 'em. It then became about me asking the guys to help me play 'em live. Now, after going through those processes, the playing of the music together has started to knit us into an actual band. Everybody has favorites and opinions and we're connecting to each other through the songs, which are changing from my songs to our songs. I haven't really experience this in a very long time, not since we formed Purple Triangles back in high school. It's a lot to think about, my mind is definitely abuzz.
We discussed getting serious about recording too, which I am all about. There is definitely a future to this thing. I can't wait to experience it...
