It was cold. He was shaking. His body: tired. His heart: racing. His mind was somewhere in between dreaming and awake. Covered in the night's dew, Caleb traced his steps back to camp with his 11 companions to confront their families with the news. Their arrival was long anticipated, and so was their news. Caleb knew somewhere in the back of his mind that he must be crazy. What he had seen on the other side of the river did not stack up with what God had told him. "How could this be right?" He thought to himself. "There are thousands of them. We have only few...God...How could you tell us this land will be ours? You say You give this land to us, but how? The odds are against us!" He wanted to tell his family what he had seen but he didn't know how.
Upon arrival back to camp, the people were eager to hear the news. God wanted to know what they had seen. But they did not know how to tell them. The truth they decided. They had to tell them what they had seen. They had to tell them that there was no way they could take the land and that God had lead them to a dead end. That God had forsaken them. Or had He?
Two leaders stood firm in their spirits. They knew what they had seen, but they trusted what they had been told. They trusted the word of God. With great optimism and fortitude they encouraged their people to trust not on what they had seen, but on what God had said. Almost none agreed accept for Caleb and Joshua's families. And so before God was about to destroy the nation of Israel for their distrust and faithless decisions, Moses pleaded on the behalf of Joshua and Caleb, for they had been faithful to His will. And so it was, that Caleb and Joshua's family line was spared because of their faithfulness and righteousness. And so it was, that Caleb and Joshua lead their people into the promised land victoriously because God said...it will be so.
Caleb is Hebrew for "faithfulness".
