Written and recorded over the past two years, Picking a Lock at the Speed of Light tells the heartbreaking story of a world-weary romantic and his attempt to woo a potential lover with the unique beauty and isolation of an interstellar tour. What begins as an us-versus-them fling quickly sours into a me-versus-you implosion, leaving the suitor alienated and reluctantly homebound. The brief optimism of the album's opening numbers is quickly shadowed as the pursuit of a detached muse becomes glaringly futile. The lead eventually accepts the loss with a permanent and painful dose of salt in the heart.
The album covers as much ground sonically as it does in its storytelling. From a jaundiced, starting-from-scratch track like No One's Gonna Miss Me, to the slow-jam sabotage of Space Bars, the coming to terms groove of Wooden, all the way to their unceremonious grounding in On the Moon, These Modern Socks take you up and all the way down with their eclectic musical palette.
