EMP Skychurch Folklife Festival 2008

Biography

BIO ------------------------------------

The Lonely Forest is a young indie-rock band from the small island town of Anacortes, Washington. Led by John Van Deusen (20) on guitar, keyboards and vocals, Braydn Krueger (21) on drums and Eric Sturgeon (24) on bass, the Lonely Forest combines passionate songwriting with memorable melodies.

With multiple in-studios and regular radio airplay (KEXP, 1077 THE END), playing to a sold out crowd at Bumbershoot, winning the 2006 EMP Soundoff, working with prestigious producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Hot Hot Heat), numerous west-coast tours (Played the Troubadour in LA), the release of their first full length album, "Nuclear Winter" and presently the recording of their sophomore release "We Sing the Body Electric!", The Lonely Forest has been building an infectious buzz in the Pacific Northwest.

QUOTES --------------------------------------

"Opening the show is Anacortes trio the Lonely Forest, who consistently pack a satisfying live wallop. The band are sitting on a growing pile of over 20 new songs written in the past few months, showcasing their evolving mastery of infectious power pop. Lead singer John Van Deusen's decision to return to the guitar plays no small part in the appeal of the new material, which is inspired in part by the writing of Ray Bradbury. When not reading nerdy sci-fi, the band have been excitedly demoing in their faraway garage/practice space/studio, and debuting anthems like "We Sing in Time" at shows, leaving the room abuzz." MATT GARMAN -The Stranger

"On "You Move," it becomes clear that TLF is Van Deusen's bar mitzvah: Through these songs, he is coming to understand human emotion, wrestling with cosmic indifference, daring to see beauty on the horizon. Through these songs, he is becoming a man." -The Pacific Northwest Inlander

"The Lonely Forest's debut album overflows with youthful passion. The sounds on Nuclear Winter are lush and epic. For such a huge sound you'd expect a symphony, but it's really made by just three young men (two of who aren't yet of legal drinking age). The piano is explosive--loud and nimble, and the driving force of each song. The bass is fluid and strong; the drumming is sharp and precise. From the pretty minute-and-a-half prelude to the droning, almost 20-minute-long end jam that accompanies the world's demise, there's no lack of drama. From the seclusion of Anacortes, the Lonely Forest have created a new world of their own, an alternate dimension sprouted from the imaginations of boys with a lot of space, time, and probably pot at their fingertips." MEGAN SELING - the Stranger

"After seeing the Lonely Forest for the first time sans guitar player (he left late last year to attend school), I was so impressed that I had to immediately gush about them on Line Out--they have consciously made their new material just as dynamic as before, even without the oh so important six-string, and as a longtime fan, that made me very happy. Drummer Braydn Krueger is a machine--one of the best young drummers in the city (and by "young," I mean under 21). Singer/keyboardist John Van Deusen's voice can cleanly croon, but he also gets emotional and cathartic, adding a nice dichotomy to the beauty of his piano. Get stoked for their upcoming album, Nuclear Winter--it's a self-described "space rock odyssey into an alternate dimension," and based on the songs posted on their MySpace page (www.myspace.com/thelonelyforest), it'll no doubt carve them a nice, long-standing niche in the local scene as not just an "underage" band, but a talented one too." MEGAN SELING

"These guys came out of no where...and blew my mind!" -Jack Endino (producer: Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Hot Hot Heat)

Hey Guys, you are just about my favorite band ever! I've listened to John's songs since the olden days and been inspired from the start. I'd really appreciate it if you'd visit my music page and listen to some of the music there. I've only seen you perform once, but I hope to be able to come to more concerts in the future. My favorite song is Leader Holding His Eyes, but they're all amazing. Keep up the good work guys! (Braydn is an incredible drummer)!

Hey guys, John, I've heard all your solo stuff from Closet Songs, Yossarian, and John Van Deusen and the Lonely Forest, but I at least think you guys should re-track them with all your amazing ablilities and if nothing more, get better recordings of some of the tracks from Closet songs, like I Sing of Hope, 8-6-45, Brick Beach, and Paint the Sky (I hope I don't seem rude, you know what I mean). It would be great! Anyway, keep up the great work. God bless.

Nice tunes, guys! Any chance of seeing you on the East Coast in the near future? We have connections with a couple festival promoters (Allgood, Jerry Garcia's Birthday Bash, etc.) and we might be able to put your music into their grubby little hands if interested. I really like "Wiseman's Warning." Great track! Kind of reminds of so many things at once... :-)
