HISTORY
PHASE 1 - The Sterlings (1994-1999)
Patrick Emswiler first made a splash on the Boston scene with The Sterlings, an outfit that both out-powered and out-popped the seemingly endless supply of power pop bands overrunning the city at the time. The band was a mainstay in Northeast clubs, sharing the stage with such luminaries as Letters To Cleo, The Figgs and The Gravel Pit. After recording a six-song EP with producer Scott Riebling (which featured keyboards by Greg Hawkes of the Cars and guitars by Mike Eisenstein (Kay Hanley, Our Lady Peace)), The Sterlings landed songs on episodes of Dawson's Creek ("Always") and Party of Five ("Four Leaf Clover").
PHASE 2 - The Spaceshots (2002-2005)
Continuing on the path The Sterlings forged, Emswiler cranked out the pop, but this time with a heavier edge and a glossier sheen. With The Spaceshots, he continued to gig heavily, playing on bills with alt-rock stalwarts like Ben Kweller and Bettie Serveert. The band spent six months recording at Q Division studios, paying meticulous attention to detail in hopes of making an anthemic, radio-friendly pop/rock record. The resulting Siren Sounds was exactly that. Songs from the record were played on Boston's two premier modern rock stations, WBCN (104.1 FM) and WFNX (101.7 FM) and has been downloaded for free 10's of thousands of times from Cherrydisc Records.
PHASE 3 - The Spaceshots (2005 - present)
While the name remains the same, the focus has changed a bit, as Emswiler has scaled back the live shows and concentrated more on his writing and recording, particularly on the collection of softer tunes that will make up the forthcoming Straight Grenadine LP. In the meantime, Emswiler is busy releasing the entire Spaceshots catalog (including a new series of archived demos) in digital formats.
The saga continues...stay finely tuned...
RAVES
"What The Spaceshots have going for them that no one else does is Emswiler, who knows his way around a hook, lyrically and musically, like few of his peers."
-- Kevin Finn, What's Up Magazine
"Snappy rich power pop pumped out by twin guitars, and a bitter ache floated on a firm go-go backbeat."
-- Linda Laban, Boston Herald
"Every song is chock full of punchy hooks courtesy of ace songwriter Patrick Emswiler."
-- Damian Saiz, Fat City Magazine
"[Emswiler's] got that gruff-yet-tuneful thing going on that gives a song beauty and power, and he sings with a rhythmic quality hard to pin down but very compelling."
-- Steve Gisselbrecht, The Noise (Boston music zine)
"Combining elements of Nirvana, Fugazi, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and a healthy dose of Television, this CD runs the gauntlet of high energy rock exploration."
-- Jerme Leslie, The Noise (Boston music zine)
"Hearing them belt out the punny "The Misery Love Co." and the nakedly catchy "Offense/Defense," you can see how the band could be on their way to a breakthrough."
-- Ted Drozdowski, Boston Phoenix
"Anytime the topic of songwriting comes up I always tell people about the old master up on the hill Patrick Emswiler."
-- Dave Pino, guitarist/songwriter extraordinaire (Damone, Powerman 5000, Waltham)
