or Some Such Nonsense

i guess that there is a whole lot to tell, but i'm not entirely sure that i should tell it. in fact, i'm not even sure that i should even be capitalizing at this point. i think that you and i can pretty much both agree that, at this point, we're way past punctuation. now is the time when we get down - you know - to the nitty gritty and all that.

well, i started playing a song about the alps and a yodeling boy or something like that. mom had some positively ancient sheet music that she had gotten when she had started learning the piano sometime in the fifties on the farmous gulbransen (we're also way past umlauts, in case you were wondering - just completely forget standard punctuation and rules of that nature altogether - at least when you're around me and i'm writing a semi-pretentious bio) that had masking tape on keys to mark their names for little fingers and currently lies in a state of, well, dust is a pretty adequate term for it.

but now, i must not delve too far into the gulbransen's history, because this is really a history of a circa 1905 rebuilt cable-nelson upright grand and how i came to love it (and music in general).

the cable-nelson was a piano my dad bought my mom when we moved out of the house into which i was born and into the house in which i grew and reached out my feelers to grab any familiar creative air that i could. we moved from an ordinary neightobrhood to eight acres of open green yard and backdoor trees (no kidding, they literally come right up to the back of the house). it was here that i disappeared into the woods, for hours at a time, trying to find my way back by the light of the orbs - mostly sun - but sometimes even moon those excursions lasted so long. at times, me and my overactive imagination (we were never two apart) scared us out of our wits in those woods and developed singing words to each other so as not to be so foolish.

singing grew into me sitting at the mahogany-colored (don't know if it is actually that, or cherry, to be quite honest) box of metal and strings, wondering how mom could decipher those weird symbols into sounds i sang to myself in the woods. so, i began to teach myself and by week's end, i was translating pretty fluently. another short spell, and it was decided that i should get a teacher...

Thanks for the compliments, you are too kind. Good luck with your new painting. Your sounds are peacful, that's a good think. I've been in Peroia. Both of my college roomates were from there. Ryan Collier (who still lives in the area) is also an artist. And my friend Robbie Augspurger. Perhaps you've met them? You never know, Peoria is a small world.
