Extraordinary Advice from Three Frenchmen

post a comment | posted Feb 22

While reading the latest issue of Death & Taxes, I stumbled upon this quote from the French duo Justice :
"That's what is exciting about music: the small gap between what you think you made and what you actually did."
This can be applied to all forms of design and I think it should be kept in mind while creating, critiquing, and analyzing our work and the work of others. We often get so wrapped up in the finishing of projects without thinking of how they will be perceived by others. We get defensive about the work we've spent so much time on that we feel an attack on our process is an attack on us. I feel confrontation should be invited, almost encouraged, to create new discussions; of course, the maturity and intentions of the participants is crucial in this process. (All subjective and belittling comments should be held for post class coffee talk). If we are to grow as designers -- or as humans, for that matter -- we must allow for these discussions to occur, evolve, and push our ideas forward.
I also found this quote while investigating the French philosopher Denis Diderot :
"I have been, and still am, angry at being mediocre"
This one should speak for itself, despite how you may feel about the man's often polemic and salacious works, he incessantly challenged and provoked his readers; we should all do the same.

En avant...
