About

Developing the InterWeberTubes is hard work, but someone has to do it. Thankfully, that's not me. I get to design and develop for it. I'm going to the Art Institute of Portland for a reason, I'm not a Computer Scientist. I could have followed many friends into the field of Computer Science, but my heart lies in design. I have a mind for programming, I truly do, but it's a means to an end, the end user, that is. I'm sure I'll be scripting for years to come, but always with the goal of delivering, rich, valuable content to my user.

I love Web Standards and applaud the World Wide Web Consortium for all that they do, slow as it may be. Accessibility is what I feel highlights the separation between old and new web designers. Of course, CSS, Unobtrusive JavaScript, and proper hierarchy make a huge difference as well. I have many, many opinions and will gladly share them in most any setting. I'll also change my opinion when I'm wrong. When I discovered that using "display:none;" on text for image replacement actually removed the text for 95% of Screen Readers, I gave into the other image replacement options out there. This also made me realize that accessibility is trickier than I had thought. Those using screen readers are no longer sitting on their hands, pouring over horrible mark-up, happy just to get a bit of clean, CSS-driven HTML. They're taking matters into their own hands (or the hands of the screen reader creators): loading in CSS (which is really meant for screens in a visual sense) to determine if content is really necessary to be viewed. This, in turn, crosses a line into the visual realm, mixing the Accessibility scene to where designers present what they believe is accessible, only to be told its useless because some other designers decide it would be great to put in useless text in "display:none;" objects. Curses, curses, curses. Can nothing be simple!? No, it can't. But, we keep trying and the Web keeps growing. That's the glory, and it will never stop.

An ancient To Do list. May 23

I found an ancient [read: two years old] To Do list while digging through some archives today and thought it'd be fun to share and annotate.
The list was stored in a todo.txt, which I probably created in Notepad++. Instead of listing action items, I listed whole projects, ...

Peter! how's it going? I've been shooting photography with a Nikon D70 for awhile. Not the best camera out there but it does the job!
