Born out of sound experiments in an improvised studio of a small London flat, Of The I's huge sound belies its modest beginnings. Coming together from diverse origins, as students of philosophy and psychology, the band's five members worked to find a way of expressing their ideas in calculated pressure waves. These were released freely, as ones and zeros, to a hungry hoard of Demonoiders, who promptly consumed 12,000 copies. The band, inspired, locked themselves away and plotted their first album while cutting their teeth on the London live scene.
The concept of self-awareness appears in various guises throughout Of The I's debut album. The sound of the record is progressive, driven, and intense, yet finds release in warm, visceral passages. The band's endeavour to envelop listeners in their distinctive atmosphere is not only the beating heart of the record, it is characteristic of their intoxicating live performances.
The band's first - DIY - EP, christened 'The Demonoid EP' after those who initially helped us to spread it, is also available for free download at mp3.com and now last.fm, where you can also join the group that some of our listeners have formed.
These tracks have been re-recorded as part of the full-length album, due out June 2008.
Until then, enjoy the music!

----------(NEW)----------
Of The I's track 'Modern Equivalent' was BBC Radio 1 Rock Show's Unsigned Band Track of the Week last week. Many thanks to Daniel P. Carter for opening the doors to unsigned bands, and for his impeccable taste of course.
In about 2 weeks, the band will also be appearing on the Damo & Ace Show on Brighton's Juice FM. They're already playing our tracks, the wonderful lads that they are, and we'll be in the studio on May 12th from 9pm to talk about life, the universe, and everything. Or perhaps just our album and what we plan to do with it.
----------(Kinda new)----------
We have finished the first phase of mixing for the album, and have released the fruits of that labour as a 3-track album sampler for your listening pleasure. Included is the studio version of the previously released "Between Being and Ego" as well as two new tracks "Single Units" and "Modern Equivalent". We hope you enjoy them.
Of The I's track "Stopping the World" has been featured on the latest installment of the Insomnia Radio UK podcast (#30). This follows earlier appearances in episode 27 ("Cold") and 28 ("Between Being & Ego"). You can find their page in our top friends, go have a listen!
:::ALBUM SAMPLER REVIEW:::
(note: we sent the mp3 files to Colin for the review, and didn't tell him the right order! The actual order is as it appears on our myspace player)
"In preparation for their debut album release in June, London 5-piece Of The I have released three tracks as an album sampler.
They have an epic sound that updates the ideas of prog-rock into the modern era. There are fuzzy guitar riffs, complex drum lines and dreamy pianos here in abundance.
'Between Being & Ego' is a re-recording of a track that was on the bands DIY 'Demonoid EP' and is a down-tempo track led by a simple piano line that keeps the fanciful flights of the other instruments anchored. The lyrics are short and repeated throughout the track to create a feel that the vocals are just another instrument in the mix. The over-all feel of the track is one of dreamy contemplation with an undertow of disquiet.
'Modern Equivalent' keeps the same pieces in place from the opening track but kicks up the tempo a touch. This time the anchor is a loopy guitar riff that eventually melts into a spiky thrash for the chorus. The slightly syncopated drum line adds to the general feeling of angst.
Final track on the sampler 'Single Units' is the first on to let go a little. While the other tracks are low key and hang together perfectly, the final track goes a different direction. This is a high paced, fractured track where all the elements seem to be doing completely different things from each other and yet it fits together perfectly. It's an exhilarating mix of powerful bass, strong drums and punchy vocals to create a track that should be discordant but is just exciting.
This is not a band that follows the traditional pattern of having a rhythm section underpinning guitar and vocals that tell the story of the track. At any time any instrument (including voice) could be doing anything so this is music that comes from unexpected directions. This is a band that probably won't ever be commercially successful, but damn it they should. It's 10 times more exciting than the cookie-cutter rock that you hear everywhere.
The album these tracks come from will be released in June and the bands 'Demonoid EP' is available from several sources on the net for free download."

Hi guys, I'm wondering if there's a place where I can buy "Demonoid". I'm listening to your tracks over and over, and I think you have a great sound and a lot of good ideas. What about the studio sessions? Did you start recording? Greetings from Italy
