I found a new community site that threatens to put a dent into MySpace. While Myspace is getting more and more commercial, and spammy, Virb is much more intimate (like MySpace use to be) and far more arts oriented. Its like the difference between going to a football game and going to a gallery. If you like the whole people bumping into you and spilling their beer on you, or drunks wanting to show you their tits, then i guess MySpace is the place to be. If not, check out Virb.
A lot more customization, much better pages (from all the browsing i've done), and a smaller and more pleasant community. I'm not saying the folks on MySpace are bad, it is just the thousand pound gorilla on the internet and everyone with a scam or a porn site is making pages and spamming. I get several messages and/or friend invites a day on MySpace where the member is banned before i see the message. Then there are all the ones who get through...
I will give credit to MySpace that they are trying to crack down as hard as they can, they just can't keep up. The smut lords and the con artists are persistant and just keep making more pages. But Virb is not so big yet, and hopefully the community and the admins can keep the trash out before it gets established. If no one clicks on their links then they will go post somewhere else. After all, they are swamping MySpace with spam because it is getting them click throughs. Ignore them and they will go away.
