Mythological characters like Hercules were popular icons, and their stories told over and over again. Today these characters have become the staple of western literature and repertory theater, but they are no longer popular icons. Pop stars and movie characters have taken their place. In 2005 our myths, parables and archetypes no longer come from the classical tradition, but are produced in Hollywood and downloaded and copied all over the world. Uncle Sam is our griot, our troubadour: he sells the parables legends and stories that millions of people build their worlds on. He gives us our gods, our titans, our heroes. Foremost among them is Tony Montana, the main protagonist in Scarface, Brian de Palma and Oliver Stone's brutal 1981 gangster movie. No single movie is more quoted and sampled in today's popular culture than Scarface. Ask any kid in the street who Tony Montana is, chances are he'll tell you, and probably even quote a few lines from the film. The fact that a movie like Scarface still has so much impact on young people worldwide twenty-five years after its release, says something about our world and our times. Tony Montana is truly an urban icon. For better or for worse, he is a mythical hero for this new century. This is why we chose to bring his story to the stage. The movie tells the tale of an Cuban asylum seeker who comes to America and ruthlessly works his way up to the top. One could say Scarface is about the violent and ugly reality of the American Dream; in fact, today, all big cities in the West have become magnets for people from all over the world, hoping they can make a life for themselves. Even in Holland, which prides itself on its tolerance and its free and open climate, immigration has within a few years time become the most important issue on the political agenda. The political consensus in Holland is that integration has failed, and the country is quickly and effectively closing its borders. At the same time, the drug trade is booming, and the political and economical establishment in the country is being rocked by one scandal after the other. Performing the text in Dutch, with Dutch actors of immigrant extraction is our way of bringing the fundamental human, social and political issues at the heart of Scarface home to Western Europe, which has so long felt above the violent reality of American society as depicted in Brian DePalma's epic gangster film. The movie is ugly, violent and tragic, but Tony Montana's tragedy is rooted in the big dilemmas of our time: displacement, identity, and ambition. This is why Scarface has such a strong and universal appeal. And it strikes a chord. Even if the Dutch political and cultural establishment is still in denial, the streets recognize Scarface, and they know: Tony Montana is real, he's alive, and he's living next door. During the show we use the help of a special guest actor or actrice. This special guest is a refugee in real life. We don't want to spoil the plot. So we won't discuss it further. But we do want to thank Stichting BV (de Nationale Stichting ter Bevordering van Vrolijkheid) for their help and coöperation in SCARFACED. Stichting BV helps young refugees in asielzoekerscentra throughout the Netherlands. They do so by initiating creative projects where kids and young people can tell there stories, show their talent and most of all: have fun. The projects help develop their future.
