Bad Circus by IntaglioBlue
From boutique synthesizers to bluegrass mandolins, IntaglioBlue's Bad Circus attempts to unify these disparate instruments into a single, cohesive experience. The eerie serenity of Empty Yard and trippy Moody Mando balance the grind of Always Looking and the disturbing sounds of Bad Circus. In the middle of the spectrum, is the the Django-ese bop of ChickenStix & Cigarettes and the smooth vocals of Teresa Terrell performing the irony of I'm the Father, I'm the Son. With the crashing of it's epic opening movement, Reef's Edge settles into a long textural day of strolling along beaches and exploring the cliffs and caves of the North Atlantic. Taken as a whole, Bad Circus takes the listener on an eclectic journey of new sonic territory.
Studio Notes:
Reef's Edge - The opening section features Fxansion Orca playing the arppegiation and Native Instruments Absynth playing the big crunch guitar sounds. The rest of the piece uses the Gforce M-Tron mellotron for violin and the Nord Electro 63 for piano.
Bad Circus - The spinning calliope is the DSI PolyEvolver while the disturbing mad elephant sounds are from some royalty-free sample CD I had laying around the studio. The samples were dynamically pitch shifted using Ableton Live. Needs to be played very loud!!
Always Looking - The background arppegiation and the big grinding lead sounds are from the DSI PolyEvolver with a little Korg MS2000 added for definition. The vocal processed though Korg MS2000.
Moody Mando - The Korg Karma performs sparkling rhythmic background with the Ibanez Classical Guitar used for the bass and rhythm. The lead is a Vega Mandolin.
I'm the Father, I'm the Son - The string bass is from a vintage Ensoniq ESQ-1 and the chirpy fills are from Native Instruments Absynth. Perfect pitch vocals are by Teresa Terrell who sang the lyrics acappella in the studio weeks before the in other tracks were created.
Empty Yard - Empty Yard was composed entirely with Big Fish Audio Alien Guitar samples with the exception of the Ibanez Classical Guitar playing lead.
ChickenStix & Cigarettes - Solo Ibanez Classical Guitar.
