I'm a big fan of the Criterion Collection, but do they really need to be as expensive as they are? I'd buy so many more if they prices weren't so damn high.

it's true. when you buy a criterion disc, though, you know you're getting something special. either the best transfer possible, or very cool bonus features, or a film that had been unavailable on dvd for many years. that's how i justify it...but they just started a new thing called criterion eclipse that is somewhat more budget conscious...

yeah. i'm never disappointed. it just sucks that criterion is usually the only place you can find these films, so you don't have much choice in the price. i guess i shouldn't complain since they are taking positive steps in preserving classic films that most people would ignore.

the criterion eclipse will just be the films without any extras. it will be the best transfer, but one of the main reasons i love criterion is the in depth extras they ahve on some of my favorite cult classics or hard to find OOP films. I guess ill have to se what they release before i take any stance on wether or not ill buy them. ive also heard they will release collections in this same type of budget release.

Maxx, I agree with you -- with Criterion films you know you are getting something special. These are not just "DVDs", not just "films" but works of art. For great art, one should have to pay a price.

I nearly flipped when I discovered that my local rental place (I think it's 20/20 video or something, on the south east corner of La Brea and Sunset) prices the Criterion stuff at the same rate as everything else. And the rates aren't too bad - something like 3 for $10 for a week. I swear, I don't work for them, although this sounds like an advert. If you're near the neighborhood, you should check it out.

I purchased The Last Temptation Of Christ by Martin Scorsese...and all i can say is, WOW! what a daring picture for it's time! Highly recommended to all Criterion fans. Another great flick that hardly anyone knows about is Man Bites Dog...an outstanding, grusome French B&W documentary...worth the Criterion price, truly!
