I am seeing alot of these reflective or mirrored pics on here, so what are you using to make them is what I want to know ;) and it does look Great :)

^ That image was made in Photoshop CS2 but the same effect could be made on cheaper software too.

It's nice, but it is not a logo.

what's with the web2.0 look?
cmon we are supposed to be ELITE, elite doesn't mean emulating the look of every other website

posted Mar 23

Jens says:

Dixies Attic: its easy. just copy the text layer, transform it upside-down and flip, then set the opacity to 20%. Then use the gardient tool. If you need you can use a layer mask. Photoshop of course.

I don't really like the typography used, or the colors. The size won't work right for the group logo either.

Tophe says:

As an aside, and I'm not suggesting it be used to make a logo for this group, but there is a (tongue-in-cheek) Web 2.0 Logo Creatr here.

Ignore all that old stuff, here is something new to talk about, I have heard that VIRB is suddenly one of the top 10 to become popular in a short period of time, I have also been doing some searching around the web and have seen several comentaries on this site, and the support it seems to be getting as well as the agreement, that myspace sucks, I have been reading this, and I think its great news for the site.
My question is where is all the activity, because I still get far more activity on myspace then here, no one comments much, not much going on in the groups, so am I just looking in the wrong places, and my activity on myspace is not adds or spam its all friends. I have been trying to get some of the ones really into using Flickr to come join, but they seem hestitant.

For those who use Flickr, can you tell me some advantages to using VIRB if you have a flickr account, so I can pass it along to my photography friends, much appreciated in advance, and also wanted to give a SHOUT OUT and say Congrats VIRB for moving up so fast, it seems there are many who share the same desire for social networking and more flexibility with page design. :)

I agree about the activity. This is the main problem virb still has. Quite often when I'm in the mood to mess around, talk about things, find cool people, post in groups etc. I find the amount of activity very limited. However this could also mean it's just hard to find where the activity really is. Portal pages with 'most recent stuff' and other things that invite visitors to go and browse profiles / groups etc. would help solving this issue I think.

Yes it will be good when the new features are added, right now it is very quiet.

Matt says:

If you have you Flickr account verified with Virb you get a module that displays your most recent photos submitted. This can show pretty much all you images if you want, it thumbnails your photo to a 100x100px this can not be changed, but you can make the thumbnail bigger but that decreases quality.

Here is the default css:

#photos_flickr div {
height:100px;
width:100px;
float:left;
margin: 0 20px 20px 0;
}

Okay cool, I don't use flickr personally but I have a few friends that do, so I wanted to be able to tell them how it works, so Thanks :)

Dixies Attic says:

Maybe I should be more clear, in my previous comment, I was not just reffering to the group in question, but the overall attitude on the site.
I see, we don't want this type, or that type, we don't want friend requests from people we don't know.
How is the site suppose to get bigger then myspace, if everyone is going to have an anti-social behavior.
It almost makes you wonder if it is wise to request friendship from anyone.
I can not be the example of a snob, and my character can not be known from one comment.
I have only denied one friend request, and it was a work at home ad page, that does not interest me.
I have one group and it is not private, like alot of groups on here, so saying I am snob is far from the truth.
Passing judgement on me because I do not agree with certain types of humor is wrong, I would hate to be made the poster child of what not to do on VIRB, that is what I was getting at.
I do understand why it was found annoying, I get annoyed when someone add's me as a friend then never speaks to me, those are the people I usually remove.
I did not come here to make enemies, but to meet more people, it just seems to me that people do not want to be met with new people, just have their own private little groups, if that is true, it is going to be hard to make VIRB bigger then myspace, so it is my curiosity as to what it is that Creators of VIRB and its Elite members, really want for this site?

Hi , few points..
1. Do not generalize the entire virb community based on a few posts in this group. As you even stated yourself - your character can not be known from one comment - I guess I could say the same but my character is pretty much known, apparently I am a snob. Can we add pretentious to that also ? merdeath is a pretentious snob, now that is classy.

Again .. To each their own but I am not into name calling I am into making fun of myself and not serious situations.

2. I went to Iceland a year or so ago for a friend wedding .. It was an amazing place. In my picture I happen to be biting a piece of ice from a glacier .. amazing place.

We just want something better, we don't want Virb to become the new Myspace

"An online marketing heaven"

posted Mar 15

Marco says:

Ralph is right!

It's not about discriminating against certain people. It's about not liking certain behaviour or style.

Compare it to a club owner who doesn't allow people in wearing sneakers or training jackets. Everyone is welcome in that club. They just can't wear sneakers or training jackets :)

So VIRB is more like the black tie affair of social networking, thanks for the replies, it better explains where your coming from, and that your not being predjudice :)

posted Mar 16

Caped Avenger says:

the problem is that on the internet, corporate identity and personal identity are almost the same thing. ralph, while you say you don't want this to become "an online marketing heaven," you are guilty of adding friends that you don't know, and you have links to your last fm, to your blog, to your linkdin page, to your twitter, to your _____. What sort of "democracy" would this be, if other people - perhaps entrepeneurs or small startup companies - were not able to reap the benefits as you do for you own personal growth?

I'm so happy about that feature! That would come in handy on myspace, although it could be funny to read sappy surverys every so often.

I noticed they don't say 'Beta' invites anymore, but just 'invites'. So I guess they are designed to help spread the word, but are probably reworded now that the site is open.

B-b-b-b-b-but we are losing our turf... haha, jk.

Although, not everyone who was a Beta member is in here. A bunch more people were in the Apple group, and that was before Virb even went public. This isn't an accurate representation of all the Beta members.
