Dang it - Now I am really sad, our other grey has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, and he is deteriorating so quickly I fear we will be losing him this week. He is almost twelve, we have had him for over eight years now. :-(
I am certain we'll adopt another rescue in the very near future, just not sure what breed.

i rescued a dog a couple months back. she's pretty comfortable with me and my mom, but absolutely HATES almost all men. she actually bit a guy a few weeks back . i'm pretty sure she was abused (by a man, likely). and i think it's mostly fear that's causing the unhappy behavior. i'm wondering if anyone has any experience dealing with abused dogs with doggy-people aggression? she's pretty good with females, but men.. for the most part. no way. it's fine walking down the street, but if we're just standing around and a man approaches or comes close she loses her doggy mind. especially here at home. she barks at men walking by the house even if they across the street!! - though i should say, once a guy came right up to her and pet her, and it was absolutely fine. so perhaps she's a bit selective with her man-hate? i've looked online for advice and such, but i'm getting a lot of conflicting advice - that or it's just websites trying to sell stuff and i find that annoying. anyone have some solid advice? a book i should read? a tip or trick?

I think Cesar Millan has some books. I know he has had a couple of different episodes on his show dealing with doggy man-hate issues - (Dog Whisperer on National Geographic Channel - Fridays at 8pm et/pt).

Cesar's Philosophy:
In the wild, a dog's very survival depends on a strong, stable and organized pack, where every member knows its place and follows the rules established by the pack leader. The pack instinct is perhaps the strongest natural motivator for a dog.

Cesar Millan teaches that, in order to properly fulfill both our dogs and ourselves, we need to become our canine's calm, assertive pack leaders. A dog that doesn't trust it's human to be a good pack leader becomes unbalanced and often exhibits unwanted or anti-social behaviors.

Cesar does not "train" dogs in the sense of teaching them commands like "sit, stay, come, heel," - he rehabilitates unbalanced dogs and helps "re-train" their owners to better understand how to see the world through a dog's eyes.

Cesar counsels people to calmly, assertively, and consistently give their dogs rules, boundaries and limitations to establish themselves as solid pack leaders and to help correct and control unwanted behavior. He doesn't believe in "quick fixes," even though changing some behaviors can appear to happen in a relatively short period of time. None of those changes will "stick," however, unless the human acts consistently with his/her dog every day to keep unwanted behaviors from returning. In Cesar's opinion, no one should ever hit or yell at a dog to correct unwanted behavior.

Sadly we had to put down one of our two rescued greyhounds just over a week ago. :-( We had for for seven wonderful years, she was 10 and robbed of several more frolicking years with us. I'm so sad.

I miss my dog, Maui. Actually, she was everyone's dog. My whole family loved her. She passed away last October. I made her a tribute video (which you can find on my profile page) and emailed it to everyone I know as a "HOLIDAY GREETINGS" this past winter. Needless to say, some felt a bit duped. I just wanted to honor her and let everyone know how much I loved her. I used to watch the video multiple times a day, but I'm not as bad now. =)

I'm sorry to hear that - what kind of dog was she? Has enough time gone by that you might consider adopting another dog?
I'm so attached to Paws - I don't know how I'll deal with that day when it comes...

Thank you. I was totally unprepared. We're not ready yet. She was a mutt. Big barrel body, little paws, GIGANTIC ears. We would put Shepard mix on the forms, but we didn't know. She couldn't really swim. She had such a personality too. One day we'll be ready again. =)

I just lost my Cablegirl kitty. (that's her name). She went out to pee, and never came back. We have searched all the acreage, attic, everywhere_nothing. It is like she vanished into thin air. I have been devastated. I don't think I have cried so much in my life.

She was a stray that I rescued and saved. A board had hit her and paralyzed her. Within a week she was walking and the queen of the house. That was 11 years ago.

Her activity was riding on the back of my vent that is on my wheelchair. Everytime I see pics I burst into tears.
I don't think I will ever be the same. I miss her. And feel quily..maybe I should have went outside with her.

How long has she been gone? Has she come back yet? Cats do have a mind of their own. I know mine likes to take off for a while without checking in...

The kitty on the Woof! Meow! site is beautiful. I love critters. Rescues are the best. I put my DollyDog beagle in a photo contest. Again for the creativity.
If you vote, Dollydog is the only picture that is black and white.

I will kick off this group by introducing my mutt - Paws :-D
Paws is a 31/2 yr. old half Staffordshire Terrier and half Black Labrador.
I adopted Paws from my friend, Renee.
And this is the story surrounding the birth of my dog, Paws:
Renee had a rescued female Staffie named Baby. Renee found Baby when she heard a dog crying from the house next door to where she lived at the time. The house had recently been vacated by the former tenants. When Renee investigated she found that Baby had been tied up inside the empty house with no food and no water. She immediately took Baby into her home and gave her lots of love! After some time had passed Baby had a "not so unexpected litter". Suddenly Renee had a whole bunch of puppies without any homes. I really wasn't considering owning a dog at that time but I felt the need to help out in some way. I hung out with litter for a few weeks, bonded with Paws and the rest is history...
Paws actually got his name from Renee and her sister. You see, Paws was the first-born of the litter and the first thing that Renee saw come out of Baby was a tiny white paw (Paws was coming out the wrong way - a sign of things to come, no doubt!). Anyway, they were able to move him around and get him to come out the right way. When they finally got him out and took a look at him thay saw that he had four white paws! Renee looked at her sister and exclaimed, "Paws!"...

This is a good group idea :)

My dog Choobie was found wandering in Chilliwack sometime last spring or early summer, and his people never came to get him. He was scheduled to be euthanized but luckily Vancouver's City Pound had a spot free at the right time, and I got to adopt him :D

He's Chow Chow/Labrador/Australian Shepherd? nobody really knows, and he lost most of his tail at some point or other, but he's a sweetie, great with the cats, so quiet most of my neighbours didn't know I had a dog until they saw us together, and he scared away a burglar. Yay Choobie!
