Johnny Cash

The Man in Black

"Johnny didn't have a piercing yell, but ten thousand years of culture fell from him. He could have been a cave dweller. He sounds like he's at the edge of the fire, or in the deep snow, or in a ghostly forest, the coolness of conscious obvious strength, full tilt and vibrand with danger."

Just saw info. on a new documentary about the Man and his spiritual roots. The story is here...http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/110307/ent_110307023.shtml. Anything narrated by Dan Rather has got to be cool.

Anyone ever gone out of your way for something Cash? Saw him live in '94 (photo w/him to prove it), went to Sun Studios, and also visited his home town in Dyess, AR. Photos are on my Virb. Blogged about Dyess. Interesting place.

As a 34-year-old, I love the American Recordings more than the earlier stuff...I See A Darkness, Redemption, Mercy Seat, Singer of Songs and others stand out. From the earlier stuff, it's hard to beat the standards...Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, and Walk the Line, but 25 Minutes to Go is fun as well. My thoughts without thinking too hard...

I love the American Recordings as well. Rick Rubin, did a phenomenal job when no one else wanted Mr. Cash. I love alot of his earlier work though too, although some of it is pretty hard to find. I like Get Rhythm, Jackson, Walk the Line, Folsom, etc. I love his hymnal music. The complete Sun recordings is a pretty nice set.

I've benn humming "Hey Porter!" to myself, but that's just because I'm far away from home and thinking about going back to visit. The Man was right about how I'm going to feel when I put my feet on Southern soil and breathe that Southern air.
