yeah i went to a mstrkrft gig in NYC in october, and CMJ and there were maybe 100 people there, but by the time mstrkrft came on there were only about 30 people left! it didn't seem like the european/australian thing had really got over there... then again is electro big in australia outside of melbourne?

Personally, I've noticed a large shift in interest in the United States in the last few years. Maybe it's just my friends and the people around me, but electronic music is kind of picking up in America.

I remember that many many people were coming to electronic music styles such as techno or house during the 2nd part of the 90s.
at that time, I thought those styles and their variants will be the future of music for the next 10 or 20 years, just like what happened with rock'n'roll.
but i was really surprised to see this old rock'n'roll and its cousin pop back to the scene with renew recipe but always this particularly strong energy. it's a circle. electronic will come back? I don't know... I guess it has never left ;-)
I would say the difference is that technologies and instruments used by electronic musicians are now also used in nearly any musical style. could it be the future of electronic music? or can we consider this as a kind of infection (argh) or an evolution?

Yes, it doesn't seem to be that popular in the states. Popular or not, it doesn't stop me from appreciating it. :) I live about an hour away from Chicago.
I presented a song to a friend of mine to listen to, and he said, "is this another one of your songs without lyrics." I about had a fit. I tried to explain, how the lyrics are presented through the sounds alone.
