glenn gould

Born September 25, 1932 Glenn Gould was a Canadian pianist, noted especially for his recordings of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, with emphasis on the Goldberg Variations (his first recording). Performing in front of a crowd was never his thing and he gave up concert performances in 1964, declaring them vaudevillian and dedicating himself to the recording studio for the rest of his career, and performances for television and radio.

Known for being a brilliant pianist, he came to be known almost equally for his eccentricities. Wearing heavy coats, scarves and gloves year round (he was a hypochondriac with an arsenal of medications with him at most times), he kept strange eating habits and toward the end of his life equally strange hours (though mostly for recording purposes). The most well known of these eccentricities was, by far, the humming and swaying he usually displayed at the piano. Some people found it crude and others found it entrancing and the same could be said for many of his recordings. Whether or not people agreed with his visions, there is no argument that Glenn Gould was a highly creative being bent on recording versions of pieces in the way he so saw fit.

Glenn died far too early on October 4, 1982 after suffering a stroke.
He is missed.
