Captain Sensible says:
So how many people here actually collect and how many are hipster trash who think finding that sweet Bowie record is "sooo vintage"?
I'm certain those are the only two options.

I don't think I fall into the hipster trash... I collect old classic rock and new indie albums on vinyl. I also pick up older records from people who no longer want them and just want to get rid of them... like these. I also collect CD's...
So, I guess I would be a collector.

i know some hipster fucks (i too have 'coachwhips' on red, but i know john), but the the lame will never know the beauty of johhny paycheck's 'fifteen beers' or 'nimrod workman', or finding a studio cut from the 60's of a country song that that they completly fucked up, then crossed out with a crayon (so you have to use a fucked up needle for the first 10 plays to get the wax out of the wax), but then the b side has a skit featuring terrible impressions of bugs bunny and tweety bird just talking on the phone about a girl named iris, recorded, for no reason, at 78. i could go on about albums all day but then i'd be either super cool or nerdy, and i don't want to be either. but, if you can ever find 'the grand canyon suite', buy that shit. johnny cash talks about going to the bottom of the grand canyon and recording sounds for twenty mins. the front cover, however, is very misleading, so check the back if you find a old, dirty record with a terrible picture of the grand canyon on the front because there is a very young johnny cash on the back. and you can ebay that shit...you won't find it there now (it's super rare like the muhammad ali 'tooth decay' shit), but when it is it drops for $500 - i, however, wouldn't sell mine. i dig.

If DJs fall under "hipster trash," then maybe I joined the wrong group. I'm definitely a vinyl junkie, tho. Nothing quite like th' black crack (maybe except real crack, but I can't say - never done it even though a lot of it gets circulated in my neighborhood). I don't do a lot of vintage, but I do have a lot of rather rare dance singles. By nature, even many new dance singles are rare, due to limited pressing. Sheesh - maybe I'm the filthiest of the trash, fostering other rubbish who think they're cool, but download the track and still think that sweet Bowie record is sooo vintage... Mr. Monster, what do you think?
I'd say there are all kinds of collectors. And non-collecting posers. Seems like there are a number of "options."

The dj is a tricky beast. There are real dj's and there is hipster trash who started becoming a dj in the last few years so he could be in charge of the music at all the dance parties that started happening every weekend. I think that trend has faded considerably, though.

I have a fairly large collection of mostly jazz and/or hip-hop stuff. I collect obscure vinyl records and other stuff I can pull samples from. I also keep up with current hip-hop singles as much as I can. I have some old Chuck Mangione that I'm pretty happy about. And I have the Bye Bye Birdie soundtrack. I have all the instrumentals from Kanye's first album on a two-LP set. I also have some obscure stage band stuff that goes back to when high school jazz bands pressed up their own records. Those are probably my favorites. Perhaps I'm hipster trash, but I'm still a collector too. Peace and blessings, vinyl addicts.

im hipster trash that collects david bowie and prince vinyl, i also collect micheal jackson vinyl and then get naked and oil up and rub the records all over my balls..........sometimes when im feeling really frisky i stick them in the crack of my ass and do duck calls and get the neighbors dogs all worked up, i think the simple fact that this question was asked in itself implies some level of hipsterism...i.e whos more of a ____ than who......who really cares is what i say......i appreciate vinyl for it being vinyl lets leave it at that, whether its a large collection or small, what does it matter, most of the vinyl i buy nowadays are newer releases to support the artists i love, and because in my mind it has more relevance in the physical realm than cds do now, i collect old jazz fusion and funk for sampling and listening purposes....

yo folks,
post some pictures of your favorite album covers. here's one of mine.

it's not the best picture, but why the fuck is he so sweaty? i wish you could really see because he's dripping: profusily (like he just played basketball or something - maybe i'll dig this out and take a better picture). now, i know there was an accident in carroll county with a subsequent conspircy, and that homeboy killed his girl because she wouldn't marry him ('banks of the ohio' is such an amazing song {"i've cried my god, what have i done, i've murdered the only girl i love because she would not be my bride"}). but dude, wipe your brow.

It's a moot point right now, since my stash is a complete mess, but for future reference, anyone know a good way to store these?
i might need to go purchase a whole lot of white sleeves yeh.

Not to be nitpicky, but since I figure most of this group's members are obsessive compulsive when it comes to maintaining alphabetic order with their records, they won't mind my suggestions to correct the grammar in the group description:
"Anyone can collect CDs...
In a world of CDs and .mp3s, we still prefer the pops and scratches created by a simple needle dragging itself over a piece of vinyl."
Also, the tags on the right don't need apostraphes. 33s and 45s are pluralized nouns, and are not possessive.
When I get home, I plan to take a picture of my collection and put it up here. There's something aesthetically beautiful in a bookshelf full of records. It would be really great if everyone else could to the same...

I am notoriously bad at organizing my collection and now there are around a 100 black discs sitting without homes. Who has the time to reorganize again and again after drunk nights mixing?

I would cry if any of any of my albums went missing. Thats why I keep them all in alphabetical order on a shelf. They are also split up by type. 33's are lined up on one shelf with 44's in a box above them and 10in. on yet another shelf. I am really anal about putting stuff back after I listen to it too.

yeh. i have that innate inability to do that. me and friends go on long dj benders and leave the room scattered with bottles and wax. it's mad fun but then I misplace great records.
As for alphabetical, I tried it once. useless for me. sometimes you just wanna mix random drumnbass tracks. plus i just got back a case of records from a party i did months ago,. am i gonna organize them into the others any time soon?
i was contemplating a genre specific organizing system. then alphabetize each section.

When I created the group, I guess I didn't realize how many different types of vinyl records there are (classics, new music, rap, hip hop, club, ect..). So that brings up the question...
What kind of music is everyone into?
Most of my vinyl is classic rock stuff. I collect cd's as well but if the music was originally released on vinyl, I have to have it on vinyl. I also have a few newer bands on vinyl like the Shins and Sufjan Stevens.

60s Garage Rock, Psych, Freakbeat, some surf - mostly 45s and compilations, but also full lengths if i can afford/find them. The Zombies, The Seeds, The Sonics are easy to find, but endless others are super rare and near impossible to find for under a few hundred.
I also collect indie rock, 90s and current, post-rock (which I'm working on this year), and other stuff I come across via church sales, stoop sales, antique shops, used record stores. Ebay is addictive. Don't go there! You'll never stop searching. I just lost an Appleseed Cast auction (3 LP SET!) that went for over $40.00 yesterday. Hmmph.
