slightly mac related, slightly not.
thanks to whoever brought in some virb comments to an apple store.
you got a good friend of mine fired, douche.
thanks. just because you wanted to complain about apple employees knowing about products before they're released.
be patient and wait like the rest of us.

Just Because iCan says:

So yesterday I was given an evaluation copy of Leopard (v9A466 from WWDC). Does anyone else really hate their implementation of the stacks feature? I've been using the OS for this since the 10.0 days (sans the flashy animations), but it seems like the function follow the form in the new implementation. I put a lot of content into folders (or stacks) in my dock right now and I give everything custom icons and just keep it organized really nicely. Unfortunately, when you add stuff to a stack in Leopard, your icons are ignored and you're presented with a new icon of the first three items in that stack.

So, if you have stacks made of folders that just contain more folders, all the stack icons look exactly the same. As someone with OCD and a need to visually organize everything, this is killing me. What I've had to do is take every folder that I want as a stack and place a shortcut to that folder (labeled "a shortcut") into that folder itself and then change the default stack view from "arrange by date added" to "arrange by name" so that the shortcut (with the proper icon) becomes the first item in the stack and then give the stack that icon.

Did that make sense to anyone? Basically, if you're a stickler for organization and you care a lot about the aesthetics of your Dock and Folder icons, you're going to be bugged by Stacks and the fact that all those custom icons you've been making for the last OS are completely useless now.

All that being said, it is a beautiful OS and I love it so far (besides of course what I mentioned above). I'm not trying to hate on Leopard or anything. I just wanted to share my woes and my work around with anyone who might share my OCD.

That does sound painful, and I'm sure I will use your solution when Leopard comes out. That is, if they don't offer a different solution at release.

So I got lazy today and I left my G5 at the office. Concerned I wouldn't be able to make it all night without a computer and the internet, I took my bosses 12" PowerBook G4 home for the night (hey, he wanted me to wipe and reinstall it anyways, why can't I do it at home off the clock?).

I have to say, I am in love with this little 12" beauty. This thing is sexy as hell (even though it's a few years old). Someone please tell me Apple is going to bring back a 12" model of one of their machines. I want one so bad.

I assume you're talking about the 12' aluminum? I had one. I still do actually, even though it died a year or so ago. I loved it and can't bear the thought of throwing it away, even though it no longer works. I have a 12' iBook (last generation made) now but still miss my little aluminum.

That's the one. I left it at work for the weekend (you know, since its not mine and all) and I miss it already....

I second that notion justbecause. The 12" Powerbook is the first laptop that I fell in love with, then Apple got rid of it. My girl just got the 13" macbook, and although it's nice and compact, the 12" is still on my wishlist.

The bad thing about the 12" laptops is the hinge. Why those break every five minutes and the other models don't, I dunno, but they do. And in addition- have you ever tried to take one apart to replace the hard drive? I still have nightmares...

Yeah, the latch on this one doesn't always click into place so you always have to tap it again to get it to stay closed, but it's hard to be mad at it. I would never want it as my primary machine... but I'd love to have it to take with me everywhere I go, surf the web while lounging around my room, and uses like that.

Highly agree with Shapeshifter and Chax. I also recommend Handbrake, Mac the Ripper and MPEG Streamclip for movie ripping (your own, of course..), WhatSize for seeing exactly what is eating up all your hard drive space, Growl for application alerts, and Barquee for a GREAT and simple way to control itunes playback without having to switch back to itunes constantly. All these are free or available for a nominal fee...

lol, I didn't know that Netscape was still a browser on the Mac. I thought they had quit that uphill battle long ago and left to try to take on Digg.com. I'm almost tempted to download it just to see if it does anything... almost. I think I'll stick with Firefox and Camino though...

Kristin B. says:

I just downloaded Camino a couple of days ago to see if it could offer anything more than Firefox does, but I was highly unimpressed. I use Firefox with a few extensions (Tab Mix, Swift Tabs, Firebug and Total Validator), so it's admittedly tough to beat. You're using both, though, so maybe I'm missing something. What's the allure of Camino for you? School me!

To be honest, I use safari for everything apart from web developing.. It seems to do everything quicker than FF and Camino..

Just Because iCan says:

My main browser is FireFox. I simply use Camino when I need to log into something with a separate account and I don't want to lose the current session (on the same site) from a different login.

In general, I'd use multiple profiles in FireFox, but sometimes I'm already logged in to Basecamp at the office and I remember something I need to do, also in Basecamp, but under a personal login.

I don't really have a problem with Safari, its just... I don't know. It's ugly looking. I love Apple and I'm a huge Fanboy, but I just don't care about safari. I love my FireFox, all my extensions, and if I need to use another browser, I want it to look at least remotely like Firfox so the transition isn't so jarring (so I choose Camino).

Netscape was bought out by AOL and continued development onto Netscape 6 7, then the Mozilla folks spun out Firefox from there.
