Hello fellow sushi lovers! I thought I'd take this time to do a little shameless self-promotion.
Anyone who even remotely likes food is invited to join Mutual Mastication. Hope to see you there!

So I have this love/hate relationship with wasabi, but I ALWAYS put some on my sushi.
Last night I had some Shrimp Tempura Maki rolls at a place out in Chicago somewhere, and proceeded to shove one into my mouth. I got some lovely tears and a fantastic burning sensation which resulted in my stomping my feet and tearing up. After I was finished, the couple at the table was like "We were going to tell you what you were using..." I scoffed at them and replied with a "I eat sushi, I know that I'm using wasabi."
I don't know if it annoyed me that they waited until after I ate it to say that, or that they just assumed I knew nothing of sushi at a.. sushi.. place..

Maybe they were some of those "know-it-all" types that feel like simply knowing things makes them more important than everyone else. I've had similar things happen to me (although neither of them involved food), and I reacted the same way you did. I think you have a right to feel annoyed for BOTH reasons, and also because they had to be nosy (and someone creepy?) and watch you eat your meal.
In any case, I love wasabi and anything wasabi flavored. Did you know that most wasabi in the US isn't wasabi at all, just a dyed horseradish powder mixed with water? Real wasabi is very hard to obtain in the US because it's such a finicky plant, but you can buy real wasabi from a farm in Florence, OR, which is a couple hours' drive from where I live. The climate there is ideal for the growth of real wasabi. If anyone is interested, you can check it out here.

Yeah, I knew about the Wasabi =P Though some places use cream cheese and a powder mix when making it, which was really weird. I usually stay away from wasabi because I absolutely hate horseradish (my love/hate relationship). But sometimes I don't mind it.
This place apparently used some kind of spicey mustard powder mix, though I think the cute old waitress was a bit clueless on it.
But yeah, I felt weird after they said that, so I just didn't eat the sushi until after they left. I KNEW they had to of been watching, because I think I heard the girl mention something about the sushi when my waitress brought me the little plate.

I am NOT a vegetarian, but I still enjoy all sorts of delicious vegetarian sushi (both fruits and vegies... num num!).
Have you ever had any fresh fruit maki rolls? Very refreshing.

I haven't, but if they're meat free and full of fruit they sound delicious! I'll have to see if I can find any around here. I have had artichoke salad rolls, which are really good.
