Any one know about who's going to deal with iPhone care?
... Will we have to pay an extra monthly charge to Cingular for phone insurance, or, will Mac offer AppleCare for the iPhone?

Well then... I guessI'm going to have to answer my own question.
I called CIngular today (they messed up on my bill). Once everything was cleared up, I thought I'd ask the customer service rep some questions about the iPhone. One of them was, "Who is going to take care of phone issues, Cingular or Apple?" The woman said since it's going to be expensive and brand new, Cingular would most likely not offer insurance for it till at least a year after it's release. She couldn't answer whether Apple would then offer their AppleCare for it... but seeing that Cingular wont cover it, Apple's got to do something, right?
There's also probably going to be a year warranty, but again, will that be with Cingular or Apple? Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Ok I don't know much about cell phones, as sad as that sounds, and if I needed a cell phone, it'd probably be the iPhone, but say I buy it for 500-600 dollars...does that include the 2 year plan?
Meaning all my calling expenses are paid for, for 2 years? No monthly bills?

hahah, i wish that was true. I'm pretty sure you will have monthly bills and all.

The 2 year contract just means that you're tied down to the Cingular (or the new AT&T) network for those two years... although you can cancel it, for a price (I think about $100-$200).
But you will have a monthly charge. With my Blackberry (and I think it will stay the same price for the iPhone), I pay roughly $100 a month for voice and data.

What does everyone think about the $500-$600 price tag? Hmmm?

I personally do not mind paying that much, I just would really love for two things that its not:
- 3g network
- open to os x dev.

3g network (cingulars fast data network rather then their slow edge network)
ope to os x dev. (meaning people can create applications for the phone)

Do you know why they aren't on 3G? Is it because it's too expensive? Or because not many people in the US use 3G capable phones? I read on Wikipedia that more than 40% of the phone subscribers in Japan use a 3G network, and 3.5G is coming out...
Isn't Apple all about embracing new technology?

I'm not sure why they arnt...no where have I read something on that. Every major city in the US just about has the 3g network. I am using a blackberry pearl that doesnt have 3g and that was coming froma LG that did, and I really hate not have 3G!
Of course the wifi will save you some places, but...until cities go wifi, it doesnt really help. I really wish they would add that before release date but I dont think so since its already a published add on cingulars website without 3g :(

Will it have iChat, or just have SMS that LOOKS like iChat?
And yeah, I have my money for it too - but it's still RIDICULOUS that they're charging so much... even with a 2-year contract! How much will it be without one? Ay yi yi

i think the price is perfectly fine. Most people don't realize its more than just a phone. Like Steve Jobs said its like 3 devices in one. Remember when the first generation iPod came out? It was $500. So I don't think it's a bad price at all. I'm definetly going to get one. I just wish it wasn't locked to cingular. I hate locked phones.

@steve
Developers can still create software. It just has to go through apple to maintain strict Quality Control. You don't want your iPhone crashing every 5 minutes like a trio do you?

for all you aussies, who do you think will be the australian iphone carrier? Telstra is currently the only one with EDGE but I can see it possibly being vodafone.

JaredBell says:
Wont be Telstra. They may have EDGE, but the iPhone will tread on their precious Bigpond Music. The reason I know this is I used to sell Telstra for Crazy Johns. When Motorola released the V3i, there where 2 versions. The D&G model and the normal V3i. The normal model had iTunes support and the D&G did not. So we never sold the normal model because it worked with iTunes.
Telstra is also very anti Apple. When I first got my Mac, I was with Bigpond. I rang up once to get support and they told me they don't support Mac's. What a bunch of losers.
Also by the time we get the iPhone, I think there will be a 3G version, so they wont need EDGE and therefore wont need Telstra. But I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Apple is depeneding a lot of WiFi for the US though. Thing is in the major cities in the US there is lots of WiFi. Not a lot of WiFi in aussie though. See the iPhone automatically switches to WiFi if you come into to a hot spot so you can browse the net and stuff with WiFi instead of EDGE/3G because WiFi is a lot faster.
So maybe Apple have realised this and thats why there is a different iPhone sort of on order for September. Europe might be getting a 3G one as well as Aussie too because there isn't enough WiFi to support it well over there yet as well as in Aussie.
Just my thoughts.
