I don't really know much about it, but I would go for something with more community involvement if you don't want to use Word Press. Movable Type is probably your best bet.

I saw what Veerle did ( i know I'm a fan boy =\ ) and was instantly turned on by the full control I had over everything with Expression Engine. Plus you can get the core edition and its free, which did everything I needed it to do. And theres still a great following. Never really looked at much else though, but thats my experience with it.
