Here's the result of an assignment in "Web Design for Industry" with the amazing task to "just think of something", which resulted in everyone on the course doing a portfolio site.
I suffered from a serious lack of inspiration throughout the entire assignment until I stumbled upon a bunch of images that gave me at least a little idea.
The funny thing is, I don't even know whether I like or dislike the site, it changes every day. Sometimes I find it disorganized and crammed, sometimes I find it clean and simple. The clicky thing in the "Projects"-page I can enjoy every day though ;-)

IE PNG Fix

[gb] Studio says:

pngfix works great - i've used it on a few sites

if you want to go a step further (depending on the site and its requirements) i recently found IE7. It's a script that does a pretty darn good job of using javascript to help render an IE6 page the way it should be rendered.

Ken says:

you wanna be careful with the ie7 library though, make sure you generally start from ground up with it, I tried sticking it on some existing projects, and things went all kablooey, ha.

[gb] Studio says:

yeah, it would be silly to through it on to an existing project (especially one that you already have some IE hacks going)

doode nice! Quick question, your dropshadows on top of that pattern, are you using png's? If so, how do you handle ie6? Thanks man, I've got the pattern / dropshadow issue on my virb and I'd like to add it, but I just havent found a great way thats supported all around.

oh and are you using blue host for your hosting? I've got the same icon on my stuff when i dont change the favicon.

Jordan says:

You can just whois the domain: IP Location: United States - Utah - Orem - Bluehost Inc

One Bright Light says:

Yup. I use Bluehost. I love them! So cheap and great responsiveness too! As for the drop shadow, its done with the "filter" you'll find under my #container in the CSS.

Ken says:

I was somehow hoping you came up with some miracle way :D

One Bright Light says:

I'm no miracle worker. I just have a friend who's got a solution for almost any CSS based question. :) I didn't see a link to your portfolio on your profile. You have one, I take it?

Ken says:

yeah, but its just a directory for now, I'll be putting up the latest four projects on the virb page (you can check it to see what it'll look like, the codes there, with firebug). anyways, give the directory a dive through if you'd like: www.csspassion.com/wieckmedia. Then theres some other directories in there somewhere. Nothing solid yet though.

Looks quite good! But this is another example of something that can definitely be done in XHTML / CSS with only the videoplayer in Flash to make it more search engine friendly and accessible ;)

Balind says:

This is a Design Firm, the website is like an interactive business card intended to present our work to interested parties, it's a subtle Flash site for entertainment, music industry, and fashion clients that require an extreme Flash site that will be heavily promoted through print and television ad's and will market itself virally... none of our clients found us through Google. there's a whole world of web out there that doesn't depend on search engines to recieve traffic - some web work has the single intention of impressing X Generation and younger on-line consumers and selling a brand in the same way a television ad would and as long as they have an SEO optimized landing page, theres no down side to doing it all in Flash.

Ken says:

Except that whole section 508 and accessibility thing. =\ But I do like the folio.

Jordan says:

There is definitely a downside to doing it all in Flash.

ProVIRB: A new Virb community site is launching soon!

Hi all,

Just thought you'd like to know about ProVIRB - a new Virb community site some freelancing friends and I are working on.

The site will be chocked full of Microformats. hCards for all authors, hReview for profile reviews and of course hAtom for all our blog posts and possibly even the vote links microformat. The site will be a great showcase for standards based virb profile and general web design.

We're hoping ProVIRB will be the number one place to go for Virb themes, modules and tutes. We've got some great features in the works which we're sure you'll dig.

So if you're interested, jump on the mailing list so we can keep you posted on our launch date (feel free to Digg us while you're there ;) ).

After signing up, head to our Virb profile and add us to your friends list. As the site progresses we'll be keeping our friends up-to-date via our home on Virb. We'll also be launching a private beta, and our first 500 friends will be invited to help us out with it (we're so Web 2.0)!

Cheers!

I just wrapped up completing this microsite for a client of ours that sells floor mats. Hard product to sell...tried to bring a fun, engaging experience that also showed off how stain-free these mats really are. Check it out and let me know what you think.
