I've been doing web design for two years now. All I have to say to those of you who are older than me (16) and are debating picking it up: do it. The learning curve is really easy, and the best way to learn is by usage. Ask around, see if anyone you know needs sites made, or make sites for fun or yourself. I strongly suggest picking up Photoshop, at least a 30 day trial. I don't necessarily condone pirating software, but, who here really has $700 to drop? At least play with its power for thirty days, as I said before. Learn about CSS. The very moment an HTML tutorial mentions tables, shut your eyes and scream "no no I won't do it!" Learn about CSS. Learn about IE and how bad of a renderer it is. Learn how to use commented if/thens that will include a special style for IE. Realize how bad of a renderer IE is. Learn how to CSS Hack fixes so that IE's crappy rendering reads it. Validate your code with the W3C validator. Develop on a Mac. If you're planning on dropping any money at all, if you're on the Mac, download this program called Coda. It's all you need and more. Learn how to manage basic Apache webserver controls. Learn the basics of scripting, it'll take you far. Realize how bad of a renderer IE is. Shun tables. Just keep trying until it works! (Then try again for another three hours so it works on IE!)
In conclusion,
well,
that entire statement had very little in regards to a point.
Just keep doing it, no matter what stands in your way. Nothing is impossible.

Download and learn The Gimp (an open source, FREE, Photoshop alternative). Use it to design your way into $700. Then purchase a legitimate copy of Photoshop. Who has $700 to drop? Web designers with talent *and* integrity.

Just get the educational versions. The cost a fraction of the price, and generally come with other good offers for educational version. I am saying this as one who has just gone through your same ordeal...
And about the tables: Amen. Don't forget about double-margins-on-div-float-left-in-IE hack.
Keep with it man, sounds like you are doing well already

"Just get the educational versions. "
Ahhh.. BUT if we're working under the premise of obeying all traffic signals and stoplights, Educational versions are not allowed to be used in any commercial work.
For personal use/education, I say go ahead and pirate it. Adobe will see their end when you get hired somewhere and force the company to drop thousands of dollars on the latest Creative Suite.

I'm a medium-talented web designer, but as Jeeph below me has stated, I'm more into print design.
But I'm working on a web portfolio right now and want to use the program Drizzo to do it. If anyone has any experience using this program, please message me. I love the interface of it, I'm just having trouble using the code. Because, basically, I suck at code.
Cheers.

Hey guys. I'm a novice designer and primarily do print design. Some of the profiles here on Virb are completely awesome, and I would like to make mine look nicer. Needless to say, I know next to nothing about web design, other than very basic html. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to learn how to make my profile look better.
Many thanks.

Hey, I'm in a similar boat... (though I first dove into web design after reading David Siegel's "Creating Killer Web Sites" in 1997... but I haven't done any web work since 2001). All I can say is it's a completely different world comparing 1997, 2001 and 2007!
I'm currently reading Jeffrey Zeldman's Designing With Web Standards (2nd ed), most likely considered the high holy book of modern web design. It does get a bit preachy (but he's earned the right, and it's good to understand the issues), and he doesn't actually begin to delve into CSS as more than a concept/philosophy until you get to page 219 (of 391 pages of content) - Chapter 9, CSS Basics. He does walk through several different examples and explains the CSS (that he does cover) quite well, but it's much more of a big-picture/high level (this is why we should do this in this kind of way) book than a tutorial. This appeals to me in the same way that I believe in the relevance of a well-rounded liberal arts education - I'm glad I have it, and I think I'll eventually have a great understanding of it all, but I'm gonna have to get my arms dirty to get started...
so I grabbed another highly regarded book - Andy Clarke's "transcending css - the fine art of web design," which was what I had originally looking for - an explanation of how CSS works by walking through several well-designed sites that nicely illustrate many of the kinds of layouts and design elements you'd likely want to use. As you work through the process/how-to of the construction, he also points out potential issues, important considerations, techniques, hints, workarounds, etc. -- I'd definitely recommend that you check it out... coming from a print background I'm almost certain this book will appeal to you.

I finally finished my final year project at the university.
It's sort of an attempt to combine a really basic social network with a pseudo-3D interface, done almost completely with Ajax. It get's incredibly slow when the number of users rises, but at leas that gave me enough to write about in my report ;-)
If you want to, check it out athttp://www.damot.org/koan/
Oh, and full support is only provided for Gecko-browsers, WebKit should work so-so.

Because i know i should get good feedback here,
I am now employed at Victory Records in Chicago, after being a freelancer for a good 3 years.
I made my first widget (one part of a larger program for musicians i hope to finish someday) for the company, a media player that also keeps up-to-date news, shows, and other contextually relevant info to whatever song happens to be playing.
now regardless of whether you like the music or not, I'd appreciate any feedback on what is good/not good about this thing. i will eventually be making another version which will be user customizable, so that will be covered eventually, but yeah, let me know your thoughts and opinions.

thanks!

Hello webbers,
I am about to head over to England for a family wedding/holiday and am looking at heading into London for a day and doing a bit of shopping. Part of my shopping list is a load of books, specifically web design/development books. In Western Aus its almost near impossible to find decent books unless you goto specific places and even then its expensive as hell, is there anywhere in particular i should look in London? I realise this could be a stupid question but i don't want to spend all day looking for a decent place to get what i want :)
Cheers for any help or suggestions.
