Eleque

Electronica / Indie / Jazz

Italy, Italy

Billboard

Eleque is a project and it started almost for fun in the Winter of 2003. The growing interest of Simone in electronic music and the desire of Fabio to confirm his own passion for this sort of music, pushes them to meet each other to give life to something creative, without having any great target. Since the beginning the two guys were able to establish a good composive feeling, despite their important stylistic and methodical differences. The first compositions are the settling ones, but soon after the results become more interesting and inspiring, so much that they decide to commit always more to the project. They decided not to exclude any possibility: electronic instruments aswell as acoustic ones are exploited, starting from the drums, going through the bass guitar, the guitar, all of this in order to let them free to explore all the several sonorities, but always preserving the same style. This style is emerging as time passes by, until when it results clear that actually the pieces are perfect to be integrated by a singing voice. Immediately the choice goes to Veronica, a singer that Fabio knew during another musical experience. The first idea is introducing just few vocal parts, not to revolutionize the style. But the potentials of Veronica are really too exciting to be left second-rate, therefore the decision is to introduce remarkable vocal parts. At this point the band is complete, and they all run the way with constant enthusiasm, even if sometimes slowly due to an 'excess of perfectionism' . Starting from here the pieces are settled up, some of them freely and promptly, some others are the fruit of lucubrations and many changes. Each piece is considered as 'existing by itself' to be able to create different and various pieces, always trying not to get limited or disoriented by the disposable sound resources.

Rewiev

Strange times those in which the Orb disrupted the electronic music: the mixture of ethnic, pop, house, concrete, dance elements and whatever else, opened minds to a multitude of exciting solutions but, the other side of the coin laid itself to the lounge frigidity of wine bars for trendy people. A lot of chaos in the middle. Then some other unexpected star brought back the sceptics to the deepest acclaim (two names are enough: Thomas Brinkmann and the so famous Aphex Twin) and there was immediately some prospect of improvement. Here we are today to reap the fruit of a generation grown up seeing the pc as a facile household appliance from which pretending solutions, positive help and quick development for a demonstration of oneself artistic ego. Over three years the trio Eleque has patiently worked out its own repertoire, combining the influences of both composers Simone Marangoni e Fabio Viero. The result is an album of 6 pieces hovering between research and melodic concessions. What must be clear it's their undeniable skill in moulding such a young, clever, almost pop and yet so daring electronic. Mirages of IDM oasis play tag, intro with shades of Aphex Twin, then a XXI century synth-pop explodes in the wonderful voice of Veronica Crosara. It would be trite and dangerous talking about a kind of Björk school; Veronica is a soft front-woman able to, and this is another big quality of her, fill the live performances with a professional and touching pathos, many times missed in the same kind of electronic music. Precious Thing is a good forerunner but, when it's One way time, it emerges an electronic pop jazz, winter tinted but not chilling: as looking at yourself on a mirror blurred by a mysterious moisture. Scenes, danceable and intriguing: retrò nineties shades and a bit wild throughout a march described by English musak words. Sensitive, it reminds Elisa after an 'alternative' turning point that the singer of Monfalcone haven't decided to enter yet. Eleque plays with details and thickens the shades. The overtones remains histrionic and flawless for all the demo long. Something smells like ethereal. Just a bigger range of emotions is missing, investigating on it so that life is entirely sung, but there is all the time needed to polish the poetics (this more than structures which are edited to the last detail). You get straight to Discus where you understand the importance of Massive Attack. Then you listen once again to this happy beginning and you start to hope for something more than an updating; ok, but Eleque can do this without any extreme effort. There's ability to synthesize, composition flair; there's something basic, an important voice, skilful at doing little discords and laudable for a significant compass. Three musicians to whim shake hands. Filippo Bordignon
