Biography.

Formed in the summer of 2000 by Daddy B the M.C.Y.T. and Grubi, the Mob began as a new version of the style that made both of them fall in love with rap in the very early 80s. They called this style "the New Old School" and began writing rhymes of their own.

Originally naming themselves (after their Star Trek: Elite Force FPS group) the Turtlehead Clan, Grubi and B began writing songs in the summer of 2000. Very quickly, they found they could end up inspiring each other, playing off one another lyrically. A few studio tests were done on the songs, from those sprung their debut EP, The New Old School. The next summer, they got back into writing songs, coming up with now-classic tracks like the original "Up to One," "Hard to See What I Mean," and "Let the Funk Flow," all recorded for their 2002 effort Evil Lurks in the Hot Cement.

In the summer of '01, Daddy B moved to Raleigh, leaving Grubi to write on his own. This he did, brewing up a storm that in 2004 became his solo debut, Master of All Beats. This work was inspired by the work he did with Daddy B in years previous, and led to a handful of catchy and clever tracks like "Fists of Fury," "Submission," and the club track "Wake Up." These were decidedly different from the songs on the two THC/CCM releases, but showed an evolution of the style and a maturation of his songwriting.

By 2006, they had managed to grab a couple of others for their efforts and formally renamed the project the Cap City Mob. The idea was that all of the members either were born in or lived in capital cities. For the two founding members, they could claim both (Grubi was born in Trenton and lived in Tallahassee; Daddy B was born in Honolulu, lived in Austin, Tallahassee, and Raleigh).

Gaelic teacher and Celto-techno musician T-Juice (born in Boston) was among their first recruits and climbed aboard. One friend Grubi had known longer than he knew either Daddy B or T-Juice was political science professor Professor Rex (born and living in Tallahassee) showed early enthusiasm for the group and eventually joined up. Brian's younger brother (and by extension, Grubi's as well) Random (living in Tallahassee) joined up as the singer of the group. Sly.One (living in Tallahassee), a co-worker of Grubi's and a rapper from way back, quickly stepped in as an MC.

Our Guests.

R-2 (A.K.A. singer Rachel Rhodes) stepped in to lend her sultry, silky voice to "Up to One" at the request of Grubi. She adds something special to the tune, complimenting the old-school sample with a whole other element your ears won't expect.

Skorcho is Grubi's wife Lisa and adds her voice to the tune "The Business(TM)" which inserts a bit of playfulness into a song about the cynical professional music industry.

M.K.A. (Madcap Karmic Alchemist) makes his single career hip-hop appearance on Professor Rex's "The Lesson" as the hype man and delivering the chorus. M.K.A. (Pat McAdams) recorded his clever, bombastic contribution to the Cap City Mob at the request of lifelong friend Grubi. There were some plans to have him make further contributions on future albums, but he died of a heart attack in May 2008 at the very young age of 33. The album is dedicated to him and his fantastic memory.

Billboard.

We are all of one tribe. We stand firm against the silence. We are our brother's keepers. We are saints of tribal science.

Lodged somewhere in the rap game between the old school, the new school, the current East Coast style, and a little bit of something else, the Cap City Mob aims to make their presence known in the next year like never before. In 2007, their upcoming album Saints of Tribal Science promises to surprise fans and critics alike with its unique style, fresh energy, and catchy hooks, carving out a niche as the premiere sound of the New Old School, calling back to the fun and excitement of the Golden Age of Hip-Hop without sounding like a parody or pale imitation. This is the real thing.
